In her words:
Sam and I met in 1998 when we were both bike messengers in Portland, OR and started dating in the fall of 2004 when Sam was living in Seattle and I was living in Portland. For several months we had been seeing each other casually at birthday parties, cyclocross races, and art openings in Seattle and then one day Sam squeezed my elbow at a bike race – he is a master of subtlety. Later that day we kissed and we started spending weekends driving back and forth between Portland and Seattle and soon Sam moved back to Portland to be with me. We moved to Brooklyn in 2008 and Sam finally asked me to marry him on a cross country ski trip at Avalanche Pass in the Adirondacks last winter. The temperature was barely above zero.
Our wedding was really special because so many of our family and friends from the West Coast travelled to be with us and helped us pull off such a beautiful wedding. We felt really loved and thankful to have such a great community of friends. We were legally married the day prior to the wedding in our cycling kits in the state of Vermont (we rode there), where civil unions are not limited to a man and a woman. Our officiant for both ceremonies is a good friend, Daniel Menshe.
