Cappy Hotchkiss is a New York-based photographer who has shot weddings in the hills of Tuscany, under waterfalls in Iceland, on the coast of Andalusia, and in many other parts of the world. Her work has since been featured in New York Magazine, Martha Stewart Weddings, The Knot, Brides Magazine, Elle Magazine, Grace Ormonde Wedding Style, Elle Japan, as well as Magnolia Rouge, Style Me Pretty, Over the Moon, Carats and Cake, Snippet and Ink, Grey Likes Weddings, and Project Wedding.
Based in New York City, the Hamptons, and the Hudson Valley, Cappy aims to capture the style and the mood that each couple has worked so hard to create. Her goal is more than simply taking beautiful images, she wishes to discover the emotion behind them. She wants to show not only the bride’s father giving his toast, but also the image of the bride and the guests as they listen to him. Cappy is a visual storyteller, preferring an unobtrusive, documentary style. She achieves this using a variety of techniques, from classic to modern, and shoots with both vintage film cameras and the latest digital cameras.
Cappy Hotchkiss grew up in Amagansett, NY
on a family-owned horse farm taking care of horses and hanging out on the beach in the summer.
She spent her free time playing with plastic Breyer horse models, cutting off their tails and replacing them with real horse hair and making saddles and bridles from the local leather store’s scraps. Her favorite pastime was setting up elaborate photo shoots with her model horses in different scenarios: in front of landscape paintings, in the tall grass of the dunes of the local beach, always searching for the perfect lighting.
After college, Cappy moved to Manhattan and then to Brooklyn where she learned more about photography by interning and freelancing as a photographer’s assistant. After photographing a friend’s wedding, she fell in love with wedding photography. She lives with her daughter and their dog, Daffodil. She hopes to one day have a pet goat and to photograph a wedding in India.
